Football Basics – YAC

A YAC is not only featured in Dr. Suess books it is also a commonly used football term.

Raider Football 011You may not hear it much in youth sports, but as your son or daughter moves up through the football ranks it may be a term you want to get to know.

YAC stands for Yards After Catch and describes how many yards the wide receiver runs after catching the ball.

If the receiver catches the ball and gets tackled immediately, there would be 0 YAC yards. If the receiver catches the ball and then runs for 20 more yard the receiver would get 20 YAC yards.

It is also important to note that the number of yards that the receiver runs after the catch is counted towards the total number of receiving yards.

The YAC is a very important part of being a wide receiver and is closely monitored in the NFL. Some of the best past and present YAC wide receivers are Jerry Rice and Calvin Johnson.

Start working with your son and daughter on catching the ball and keeping upright so they can get those extra yards!
