Have you seen the degree ads where they challenge you to “Do More” by featuring athletes such as Kevin Durant and Alex Morgan who according to degree are “going out of their comfort zone, and doing something they love other then playing their respective sports (soccer and basketball)”. I totally get it, and love Degree’s efforts to paint these athletes with a broader picture, but I challenge every athlete to take it a step further. Kevin Durant cycling and Alex Morgan paddle boarding is what I call trading sport for sport, and I would question how far out of their comfort zone they really are?
My challenge: Do More – Outside of Sports. Be resnissancisical, (yes this is my own word) and really challenge yourself to find something totally unrelated to sports. Why? Because you might find something you really like, you might learn something and realize that playing a sport is not the only thing you excel in. Read a book, write a story, go to the theatre (not movie theatre), take a cooking class, design a website, build a boat, I think you get it. It’s 2013 and we have the world at our finger tips. If you limit yourself to just sports you are missing out, and failing to see the big picture.
Practice sports, play sports, love sports, but if you have a extra moment don’t be afraid to really go outside your comfort zone and do what? DO MORE—OUTSIDE OF SPORTS!
