Do More – Outside of Sports

Have you seen the degree ads where they challenge you to “Do More” by featuring 051athletes such as Kevin Durant and Alex Morgan who according to degree are “going out of their comfort zone, and doing something they love other then playing their respective sports (soccer and basketball)”. I totally get it, and love Degree’s efforts to paint these athletes with a broader picture, but I challenge every athlete to take it a step further. Kevin Durant cycling and Alex Morgan paddle boarding is what I call trading sport for sport, and I would question how far out of their comfort zone they really are?

My challenge: Do More – Outside of Sports. Be resnissancisical, (yes this is my own word) and really challenge yourself to find something totally unrelated to sports. Why? Because you might find something you really like, you might learn something and realize that playing a sport is not the only thing you excel in. Read a book, write a story, go to the theatre (not movie theatre), take a cooking class, design a website, build a boat, I think you get it. It’s 2013 and we have the world at our finger tips. If you limit yourself to just sports you are missing out, and failing to see the big picture.

Practice sports, play sports, love sports, but if you have a extra moment don’t be afraid to really go outside your comfort zone and do what? DO MORE—OUTSIDE OF SPORTS!

Sports Tip of the Week -Don’t Be A Ball Hog

The Wikipedia definition of ball hog is ” a derisive term for a player that handles the ballpenn high school 009 exclusively to the point of impairing the team. “Ball hogging” is generally considered unacceptable playing behavior at all levels of basketball competition”

My definition of a ball hog is a jerk who only cares about his/her stats, shoots all of the time, and doesn’t care about the team. Wikipedia is much more politically correct, but both of us are making the same point…… don’t be a ball hog.

Yes we all like to score, we all like to see 30 points next to our name and we all love to hear the cheers of the crowd. Being a ball hog may get you some of those things, but in the end you will be losing out. Your teammates will not like you, you may end up on the bench, and teams that are fueled by ball hogs usually lose. You choose a team sport so guess what, you need to actually be a member of the team.

Parents, you know who you are, please stop telling little Johnny or Amy that they are the best on their team and they should shoot ALL of the time. We know it gives you a deep satisfaction when your kid has the most points, but you are creating a monster. Please learn what the term assist means and cheer accordingly.

Learn to pass, play defense, and rebound. Learn to be a team player, and most importantly Don’t Be A Ball Hog!

From Catfished to #1

Manti Te’o has definitely had a bit of a rough transition from College to the Pros but that didn’t hurt his #50 jersey sales. NFL.com came out with the top selling rookie jerseys from April 1st – June 30th of this year and Teo was on top. Do you think his “girlfriend” bought his new jersey?

Here are the top five selling rookie jerseys.

1. Manti Te’o  – San Diego Chargers

2. Tavon Austin – St. Louis Rams

3. E.J. Manuel – Buffalo Bills

4. Cordarrelle Patterson – Minnesota Vikings

5. Eddie Lacy – Green Bay Packers

Our Very Own Field Goal Post

During the winter of 2013 Kaden and I had our very own Field Goal Post in our front yard. The poles were around 80 feet tall, and the cross pole was a little high but I bet Jason Hanson (former Detroit Lions Kicker) could have kicked it through. Think I am kidding, see below……………..

Sports Tip Of The Week – The Small Forward

So far on Mother and Son Sports we have covered 3 out of the 5 basketball positions. The point guard, shooting guard, and center (see Sports Tip Of The Week for these posts). Now it’s time to take a look at the small forward. The forward position is usually played by someone that is taller then a guard and smaller then a center, makes sense right? The small forward typically lines up on either side of the court, and positions him or herself between the three point line and foul line.

The small forward has some of the characteristics of both the guard and the center. Typically you are looking for the small forward to score points, have a decent shot, play good defense, get to the free throw line, and bang the boards.

Notable small forwards include Kevin Durant, Scottie Pippen, and Grant Hill.

Here are a few tips to becoming a great small forward.

1. Master the Mid Range Shot – As previously mentioned the small forward is typically set up between the free throw lane and three point line. Most shots are taken in that area so you need to work on your mid range jumper. Practice moving without the ball, and taking a shot off of a screen.

2. Defense – Your son or daughter may be asked to shut down the other teams star player. Make sure you are practicing those defensive slides, getting through a screen, and understanding where the ball and your man is at all times.

3. Attack the Basket – Be aggressive on both offense and defense. Make sure you are practicing your one on one moves and quick cuts to the basket. Don’t be afraid to get physical and crash the boards.
