My Top Five Favorite Teams

These are my top five favorite teams for the 2013-14 NFL Season.IMG_6787

Detroit Lions: The Lions are my first favorite because they have an awesome player in Calvin Johnson. They have the best QB Matthew Stafford. The Lions should have won the game against the Colts last year but instead the Colts won!

Chicago Bears: The Bears had a pretty good season last year until the Seahawks took the win by a score of 23-17. The Bears had QB Jay Cutler.

Green Bay Packers: – The Packers had a good season last year with Aaron Rodgers and his amazing throws. The Packers had a good season until the Giants and Eli Manning came along. I thought that they were going to make it to the Super Bowl but I guessed wrong!

Denver Broncos – The Broncos had an awesome season last year. They were in the playoffs and were close to going to the Super Bowl! Peyton Manning had a good season with the Broncos!

San Francisco 49ers – The 49ers had a good season and were in the Super Bowl last year. They barley lost to the Ravens. I think they will be in the Super Bowl again this year!

These are my five favorite teams.

Don’t Kill A Kid’s Dream

When I was in eighth grade I wrote a paper titled “The First Woman Basketball Player in the NBA”.  I remember writing the paper like it was yesterday, and I firmly believed that I was going to play in the NBA. It was my dream, I obsessed about it, and I was going to make it happen…………………until my teacher pointed out in front of the class that a woman would never make it to the NBA, and I should work towards something else.

After this was pointed out I remember feeling a number of emotions, anger, hurt, and unfortunately doubt. This was my dream and here was someone telling me I couldn’t do it. Would the statement my teacher made hold true? Of course it did, as many of you have already guessed I am not a current member of the NBA. I am positive that this teacher wasn’t trying to hurt me or kill my dream, in a sense I think he/she was trying to protect me from future disappointment. Yet this was my dream and I had the right to hold onto for as long as I wanted. In just another year or two I realized that I wasn’t making it to the NBA, and that I was going to have to work really hard to make it to a Division 1 school (which didn’t happen). It would have been nice to hold on to that NBA dream a little longer, but that dream died as soon as the statement was made.

As parents, coaches, and teachers it is our job to protect our kids, athletes and students. Sometimes we feel the need to bring them back to reality, or tell them about the cruelty of the world before it’s necessary. The reality: the majority of kids won’t make it past their Varsity team, and most won’t even make it that far. Your son or daughter will realize that in their own time, until then have a little faith and let them DREAM!!

What I Learned At Notre Dame Football Camp

This summer I went to Notre Dame Football Camp. When I was at the camp I learned aIMG_6813 lot of things. I learned how to tackle. I learned how to kick field goals and block another player. I also learned how to snap the ball out of a players hands to make the player fumble. My favorite position to play is Wide Receiver. Camp was fun and I liked it because all of the activities were fun. The most fun at camp was when I got to meet Coach Brian Kelly and Running Back George Atkinson!

3 Simple Tips For Better Perfomance

As parents we want the best for our kids and want to see them do well on the playing field. Here are three simple tips to help achive that goal.

1. Double Knot Shoelaces – I learned this the hard way after watching Kaden run around the football field with loose laces. He was more worried about tying his laces then the upcoming play. It also was a distraction for his Coaches who had to take time to help him tie his shoe. So double knot those laces, it helps!

2. Don’t Eat Fast Food Before The Game – This one is also difficult because it’s easy to get in the habit of picking up McDonalds, or Taco Bell before the game. Time is short and we don’t want to have our kids playing on an empty stomach. Unfortunately playing with a greasy stomach is not much better :). Try to plan ahead with a small snack before the game.

3. Water -Make sure your kids are hydrated before the game and you bring a water bottle to the game. Not easy tasks when we all know they would rather have pop! Keeping hydrated improves performance, so do your best to fill that water bottle up!

Follow the above tips and you will see the results on the field. Remember teaching good habits at a young age helps your athlete in the long run and these habits will hopefully stay with them throughout their sports career!

Football Basics – Scoring

Fall is just a throw, pass, and catch away meaning we are a step closer to this moms favorite season, FOOTBALL SEASON. Here are a few football basics for those of you just getting into the game and wondering what it’s all about.IMG_6816

Touchdown – When someone scores during a football game it’s called a touchdown. A touchdown is worth 6 points. After a touchdown is scored the field kicker comes on to kick what is called an extra point. One touchdown + one extra point equals 7 points. There is the potential to go for what is called a two point conversion, check back in with Mother and Son Sports for more information on the two point conversion.

Field Goal – A field goal is worth three points. Most field goals are between 20- 50

yards. The kicker must kick the ball directly through the field goal post, which is the yellow uprights that you see at the end of both end zones.

Safety – A Safety is when the defensive team stops the offensive team in their own end zone. For example if the running back has the ball and is tackled and brought down in his/her end zone you would have a safety. A safety is worth two points to the opposing team.IMG_6791
