Football Basics – Two Point Conversion

Previously on Mother and Son Sports we discussed scoring and the different ways that a football team can score points. The two point conversion is one of the less talked about scoring plays and something you don’t see everyone game.

The two point conversion occurs when the offensive team scores a touchdown and chooses to go for two points instead of kicking the field goal. In the NFL (National Football League) the ball is lined up on the two yard line and the offensive team gets one chance to get the ball into the opposing teams end zone.

You may be wondering, why go for two when a one point kick is practically a guarantee. Typically this decision is part of an overall strategy, the Coach may be trying to get the points to be down only by a field goal or touchdown, meaning it is now a one score game. A two point conversion chart invented by Coach Dick Vermeil in the 1970’s is still utilized by coaches today to determine whether to go for one or two.

The two point conversion can be a very exciting scoring opportunity and usually has a big impact on the overall result of the game. If you really want to impress your son, daughter, family or friends become familiar with the two point conversion chart and next time the game is on take the opportunity to yell “they should go for two”!

Move Fast – Shoot Slow – Look at the Basket

As I was shooting baskets with Kaden over the weekend I noticed that he had gottenPictures for blog (1) 031 into the habit of taking a lot of running shots. What is a running shot you say? It can be best described by moving as fast as you can while dribbling and the putting up a shot while still in motion without even looking at the basket.

The running shot is common among young b-ballers because it takes a lot of coordination and thought just to remember to dribble, to know where you are on the court and to locate the basket. It’s very easy to just throw the shot up and hope it goes in. Unfortunately if you don’t take time to set your feet and actually look at the basket the ball most likely is NOT going to go through the hoop.

As I continue to work with Kaden I am finding that you have to find a way to simplify the game so that a seven your old understands what you are talking about. To solve the problem of the running shot I told Kaden to think about three things. Move fast, shoot slow, and look at the basket. In essence I was telling him to come to a jump stop and get set before he shoots. With a final reminder to always look at the basket.

Remember to keep working with your kids so they don’t develop bad habits like the running shot. Keep your explanations simple and give lot’s of praise when they do it right!

You Throw Like A Girl

It is 2013 and you think we would have moved on from phrases such as “you throw like a girl” but here we are in the twenty-first century and it’s still being used. Here are six reasons I would like to see this phrase eliminated from both parents and coaches vocabulary.

1. What does it even mean to throw like a girl? Are you throwing with a touch of femininity, is the ball not going far enough , is it just not a good throw in general? We tend to use the phrase so often yet have we even defined what it actually means. Most parents or coaches use it to mean that you are throwing like a sissy.

Here is an idea, why don’t you try teaching the player the fundamentals and what they actually did wrong instead of relying on outdated phrases. Sometimes we get lazy with our coaching (teaching) and rely on antiquated thinking and methods in order to pull a performance out of a player.

2. It is 2013 and time to think of something a little more clever as a put down. We have woman that are leading nations, and CEO’s of companies yet we still have people using lame phrases such as the one above and thinking that it’s cool or acceptable.

3. It is demeaning to woman athletes and young girls starting out in sports. How would you feel if you were playing with a bunch of guys and here comes annoying sports Dad yelling, hey Johnny you throw like a girl!

Admittedly there are a lot of woman (girls) out there that don’t throw a football, or softball well but they could care less and this doesn’t mean that they are a inferior species. I can assure you that the woman and young ladies that play football, softball, and basketball can throw and shoot just as well as the boys. Do them a favor and lift them up instead of using another annoying phrase to bring them down.

4. It gives young boys and men the idea that woman are inferior. Boys don’t start out thinking that woman or girls are inferior, they are taught this mentality by parents and coaches. It starts with phrases like “you throw like a girl”, or  “don’t let the girls beat you!”. We think these statements and phrases are innocent but it automatically put’s pressure on the boys to be better and get down on themselves when they are not.

We have young men worrying about being beaten by a girl when they should be focused on their own game and improving their skills.

5. The phrase “you throw like a girl” can lead to other more obscene or inappropriate phrases. Think about it, if you give a coach the power to put down an entire gender then why not move on to race, or sexuality, or someone wearing glasses?

6. Hey mom’s I hear you using the phrase too, did you realize that you are putting yourself down when you say that? If you want to demean yourself I guess that’s ok with me, but I’ll choose a different path.

I don’t want to be the pc (politically correct) police but I have heard this phrase more than once at Kaden’s practices and games and frankly I am tired of it. We can do better and should do better for our kids and the next generation of athletes. Think before you shout and be aware of the impact that a phrase or a word can have on our young athletes.

Week 2 was another fun and interesting week in the NFL, here is what happened.kaden writing 006

Detroit Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals: The defensive line was doing good in the first and second quarter then in the third and fourth quarter they did horrible. The Lions lost to the Cardinals 25-21. The players that were good were Calvin Johnson, he had two touchdowns.

New York Giants vs. Denver Broncos: The New York Giants got stomped by the Broncos! It was 41-23. The best players in the game were Wes Welker and Peyton Manning. Peyton was great because he beat his brother Eli Manning.

Green Bay Packers vs. Washington Redskins: The Washington Redskins got beat by the Green Bay Packers. The score was 38 – 20. Right now I am going to call them the Washington Lose skins! Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdowns and RG3 threw one interception.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Pittsburg Steelers: The Bengals beat the Steelers and the score was 20-10. Ben Roethlisberger was the worst player in the game, he did not throw good. Before the game I believed in the Steelers but now I don’t because they are 0-2. Bye bye Steelers, hello Bears!!

Football Basics – 10 Yards in Four Downs

If you are just learning the game of football it may be confusing to understand how the IMG_6810offense stays on the field and what causes the defense to get the ball back. Some beginner questions are as follows.

1.  How does the other team get the ball back?

* The other team gets the ball back when a team falls to move the ball forward ten yards in three downs. A team actually gets four down and a coach my decide to go for it on the fourth down but typically punts the ball back to the opposing team on down number four.

2. What is a first down?

* A first down occurs when the offense successfully moves the football forward ten yards. As stated above the offense gets four downs to achieve this task. A down means every time a play is run. For example: The play starts, the quarterback passes the ball, the ball is caught and the play ends equaling one down.

3. How many yards does a team have to go to get a first down?

* If you have been  reading this article you already know the answer to that question—ten yards!

Theoretically ten yards on three downs does not seem that far to go, but as you start watching the games and getting more involved you will find it can indeed be difficult!

Please check back in with Mother and Son Sports for more football basics in the weeks to come. If you have something specific you would like to learn please let us know and we will do our best to tackle that topic! Yes, the pun was intended :).
