Panthers vs 49er’s – Even Steven

The North Carolina Panthers face the San Francisco 49ers this week in the Divisional playoff game. The winner gets a ticket to the NFC Championship game.

The Panthers are still on a roll and have a chance to beat the 49ers.

Cam Newton and Steve Smith (Panthers) can dominate the 49ers. Yet the 49ers have Frank Gore, Colin Kapernick and Anquan Boldin. The matchup for both teams will be very even with great defense and a sprinkle of offensive genius on both sides.

Both teams have a 12-4 record and will have to play their best to win. Kapernick and Newton have to be careful with the ball and can’t be throwing interceptions.

At the end of the day my pick is the North Carolina Panthers edging out the San Francisco 49ers by a field goal.

Football Basics – Five Football Terms To Know

Watching your son or daughter on the flag (or tackle) football field may be the first time many of you have ever watched a full game of football. Sure you may attend the Super Bowl parties each year but you can admit you are more interested in the cheese dip and the commercials then then actual game itself.

For the football beginners out there start simple and take a look at these five terms that are commonly used within the game.

Touchdown- A score in football that is worth six points. This happens when a player on the offensive (sometimes defensive) team is able to get into the end zone of the opposing team. The touchdown is the holy grail of football and is ultimately what each team is striving for on each possession.

End Zone – As we just discussed above the end zone is where the player needs to be in order to score a touchdown. The end zone is at both ends of the field and is a 10 yard long area. In youth football it is sometimes difficult to determine where the end zone is but it is usually marked off by orange cones on the end :).

Down – This is one of the most confusing terms for beginners in football. When I attend Kaden’s games I often hear “how many times do they have the ball, or how does our team get the ball back?”. A down is a period of action that starts when the ball is put into play and ends when the ball is ruled dead. Typically the hiking of the ball starts the play and a tackle, or incomplete pass ends the play. One play is equal to one down. A team gets four downs to make it ten yards, if they do not accomplish this goal the other team gets the ball.

Interception – An interception is one of the most exciting defensive plays on the field. This happens when the defensive player catches the pass thrown by the ‘Quarterback, which is intended for the offensive player. The defensive player essentially intercepts the pass, hence the term interception. In some youth leagues play is stopped when the interception occurs and the player is not allowed to run. Typically when the ball is intercepted in the majority of leagues the player is allowed to run until he is tackled by the other team.

Fumble – Another term when the offense typically turns the ball over to the defense. A fumble occurs when the player carrying the ball drops the ball before he is tackled to the ground. A fumble can happen when you are handing the ball off, on a snap, or simply with the player that is carrying the ball. The defensive mind set is to go after the football and try to cause fumbles which is why you may see many defensive players “swatting” at the football.

Leaving a Legacy

Mother and Son Sports typically covers just that, sports; yet every now and then I get the itch to write about something a little different than sports.

Although I typically try to weave sports into the post, sometimes there are more important topics to discuss. Hence today’s post, leaving a legacy.

For those of you that follow Mother and Son Sports this post will be a bit of a follow up to my Remember the Monarchs post.

As I find myself entering my late 30’s (yikes) I have been thinking more and more about leaving my mark on the world or at the very least my family. What talents do I have to pass on to Kaden and quite possibly the rest of the world? What can I do to make sure my short time in this world is important?

As Mother and Son Sports continues to evolve I have realized that it is becoming less about trying to make a buck and more about my passion. Leaving a legacy of my sports knowledge to others. Even more importantly, Kaden and I spending time together, making memories and making sure he has something to look back on.

Some of us pass recipes down from generation to generation, other’s work on old cars, and other’s pass along musical knowledge. All of us have talents (and knowledge), and the most important task we can do is to pass that talent on.

Do not let your talent die in your nine to five job, re-kindle your passion and pass it on.

Sports gives parents the opportunity to pass on knowledge on a daily basis. Think about it. You are the one that will teach your son or daughter to throw their first pitch, put a glove on the correct hand, kick a soccer ball, shoot basket, twirl a baton, start a dirt bike.

These may be simple life lessons to some yet the irony is that they will last a lifetime.

Take it a step further than your son or daughter and think about the impact you may have if you use your talents to Coach, to volunteer, to teach kids other than your own. Your knowledge will be passed down from those kids to their kids, and son on, that’s what I call leaving a legacy.

You don’t have to be a Nick Saban or a Bill Bellicheck to leave your mark. Some of my fondest and best memories are of playing youth sports and the Coaches that worked with me. The Coach Konkles, and Mr. Elmer’s of the world who took a little bit of time out of their day to work with a kid that loved sports.

The funny and difficult part about leaving a legacy is that we usually don’t know we left it. Coaching is difficult, volunteering takes time, and a lot of times it’s hit or miss with the kids you are working with. Who is getting it, who really cares about this?

Don’t stop or not even try because it’s difficult, that is not how legends are made. Search your sole, remember your talent and start passing it on.

Mother and Son Sports has not made a dime since I started it six months ago, but what it has done is passed on knowledge. As I continue to write this blog I find myself getting excited about the prospect of who might mind the sight, who it might help, and the fact that I am creating something of my very own.

Sure, there may be millions of sites that tell you how to throw a curve ball, and shoot a basket and that’s fine with me because in my heart this site is so much more.

At the end of the day if Kaden is the only one that reads these articles or knows about the site than I will have done my job. I will have passed down what is important to me to my most important person and that’s good enough for me.

Old School Gaming

About a month ago I had the pleasure of shopping at the Warehouse of one of South Bend’s hidden treasures Junk Evolution.

Upon entering the Warehouse I immediately spotted a vintage foosball table and it was foosball table 003love at first sight. I had always wanted a foosball table as a kid and and I knew that Kaden would be all in.

I tried to keep my excitement in check since I was in fact in the Warehouse and knew that bargaining was a possibility. I slowly walked over to the table and tentatively lifted up the price tag……………………$25. My heart leaped and I quickly asked the owner if it indeed was for sale.

Of course it was for sale and without hesitation I stated “I want to look around a little more, but I will take it.” After finding a few more treasures I paid the $25 and proudly loaded the table into the trunk of my car.

Kaden, who was with his grandparents for the weekend came home Sunday night to a foosball table 001vintage foosball table in the living room. He was very excited and we immediately played a game to ten, all of the levers working properly and the soccer men in perfect form.

It’s since been a few weeks and Kaden and I play regularly, and are talking about having some tournaments. Kaden is an avid gamer and loves the Wii but I have to say that the foosball table is taking the cake right now. Proving that sometimes a little bit of vintage can be refreshing in this modern fast paced world.

The Foosball Table will go down as my prize purchase for 2013 and to think it was a measly $25. The Wii, and Xbox 360 are great but it seems that Kaden and I are doing more bonding with the foosball table! What more could a mom ask for!
